Boxing Day in Guyhirn

All the presents unwrapped, the last slice of turkey eaten and now it’s time to relax and spend time with friends and family.

The origins of Boxing Day can be traced back to the Victorian era were it was traditionally a day off for servants. They would received a ‘Christmas Box’ to take home containing gifts, bonuses and sometimes leftover food. December 26th is also the feast day of Saint Stephen, the patron saint of horses, which is why Boxing Day has come to be associated with horse racing and fox hunting. But throughout the years it has always been a special time to gather your friends and family together.

Our wonderful dining area has enough room to cater for the whole family and our team of chefs will be cooking some fabulous dishes with something for everyone.

Clock this! It’s that time of the year to put your clocks back!

The good news is that you’ll get an extra hour in bed on a Saturday/Sunday morning. However the bad news is that the nights are drawing in ever-quicker.

We know how easy it is to forget so we thought we would give you a friendly reminder to put your clocks back 1 hour as daylight saving officially ends at 2am on the last Sunday in October (30th October).

The idea of moving the clocks forward during the summer and then back again was first proposed in parliament in 1907. Later, in the Second World War clocks were put forward an hour to boost production in factories and so that workers could get back home before the blackout.

The Oliver Twist have some exciting news… The Haley Brothers are performing LIVE on October 28th at 7:30pm!!

Lawrie Haley began playing the piano at the age of 6 and did his first gig at school aged 13. Then in 1976 he began his pro career with ‘The Haley Brothers’ playing bass and singing on the Northern Club circuit, summer seasons and cruise ships. He is best known for his 4 years as a backing vocalist / bass guitarist with the Monkees.

We have 60 tickets available for this one off evening and tickets cost just £10pp.

We will be putting Hot Dog & Chips on during the evening and this is included in the price.

Professional qualifications would be preferred but not essential.

Christmas Puddings at The Oliver Twist Inn

It’s that time of the year again! We have been working hard to get our home-made puddings made and ready to be bought.

We really enjoy coming together as a family to make these home-made puddings. They are made using an old fashioned, secret family recipe which has been in use for over 25 years, and was first started by our wonderful nan!!

To ensure that we always produce the best Christmas Pudding, we never mass-produce them, but continue to lovingly make them in small batches as we find that this is the perfect way to keep the delicious flavour and moist texture.

Each year we try and make more than the previous year but we will always have limited stock so make sure you get yours as soon as possible.

This Friday – 27th March, we are holding our next theme night which will be French evening.

With a selection of traditional French cuisine, you can expect there to be a slight (Oliver) Twist with the menu!

Pour commencer

Watercress & Potato Soup

With a rich colour and peppery in taste, finished with a quails egg crouton

Mackerel with Lime

Mackerel fillets marinade with olive oil and lime leaves then pan fried and served with a squeeze of lime

Duck Rillettes

Rillettes are prepared from cooked shredded meat and are served in ways similar to pate, and served with toasted baguette

Plats Principaux

Beef Bourguignon

This is an iconic French dish, made with a full bodied burgundy red wine

Provencal Vegetable Gratin

Similar to ratatouille this dish is tangy and fragrant and finished with parmesan cheese

Pork Belly Confit with Apples

Slow roasted and then braised this pork confit is tender and moist, with caramelised apple wedges

Pan fried chicken with garden Vegetable & Pancetta Ragout

Pan fried with crispy pancetta with broad beans and spring onions

Bouillabaisse

This is an elaborate fish stew from Marseilles, originally the food of poor fisherman. A voluptuous mix of succulent fish and shellfish.

Desserts

Tarte Tatin with Rosemary and toasted Almonds

A classic French dessert named after the famous Tatin sisters Caramelised apples and puff pastry served with crème fraiche

 Bitter Chocolate Mousse with Orange Zest

A rich dark chocolate brulee with tangy orange zest

Thai food has become really popular in the UK, and here at The Oliver Twist we are bringing some of the tastes of Thailand to you.

Join our Thai Theme night on Friday 30th January 2015 to taste some traditional Thai dishes.

Our aim is to transport you into a dream of warm sunshine, white sandy beaches and the exotic flavours of Asia – so you will forget about the cold, damp weather here.

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. It’s a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.
